IIT Madras Alumni Startup Discovered Materials Raises $9 Million to Accelerate AI-Driven Semiconductor Innovation

Indian deep-tech startup Discovered Materials has raised $9 million (around ₹85 crore) in seed funding, marking a significant step for the IIT Madras alumni-led company as it works to use artificial intelligence to discover new materials for next-generation semiconductor chips.

The funding round was led by Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners and a group of global angel investors, including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar.

Founded by Advait Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, Discovered Materials is taking a different approach to one of the semiconductor industry’s increasingly difficult challenges: finding materials that can keep up with the demands of increasingly powerful chips.

As artificial intelligence workloads become more computationally intensive, chip performance and heat management have become closely connected. The company says modern AI chips can generate heat exceeding 140 watts per square centimetre, creating an urgent need for improved materials and thermal-management technologies.

Discovered Materials is developing AI agents designed to search, identify and help validate materials that could be useful across the semiconductor manufacturing stack. Rather than relying solely on traditional laboratory experimentation, the startup aims to combine AI-based discovery with real-world validation to shorten the path from a potential material to practical semiconductor applications.

The company is initially concentrating on materials that can help address the growing thermal challenges associated with advanced chips. However, its longer-term ambition extends beyond heat management, with the technology intended to explore materials for different parts of the semiconductor ecosystem.

Alongside announcing its funding, Discovered Materials has also introduced Material Discovery Bench, a benchmark designed to evaluate AI agents on real-world semiconductor materials-discovery problems. The company has additionally announced hundreds of materials discovered through frontier AI models.

The development comes at a time when semiconductor technology is becoming increasingly dependent on advances in materials science. As chipmakers push toward higher performance and greater efficiency, conventional materials and manufacturing approaches face new limitations.

AI could potentially change that equation by allowing researchers to examine much larger numbers of possible material combinations and properties than would be practical through conventional approaches alone. The goal is not simply to generate theoretical candidates, but to identify materials with characteristics that could eventually translate into commercially useful semiconductor technologies.

For India, the startup’s IIT Madras roots also underline the growing role of academic talent in the country’s deep-tech ecosystem. Discovered Materials is part of a broader generation of Indian startups attempting to address technically demanding problems in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced materials.

The $9 million investment gives the company capital to continue developing its AI technology, expand its research capabilities and move promising materials closer to real-world semiconductor applications.

The bigger opportunity could lie in the intersection of AI and materials science. If AI systems can reliably accelerate the identification and testing of new materials, companies like Discovered Materials could help reduce some of the time and cost traditionally associated with materials research.

With backing from major venture investors and a technology focus tied directly to the semiconductor industry’s next set of challenges, Discovered Materials is positioning itself in an emerging category where artificial intelligence is being used not merely to build software, but to discover the physical materials needed for future technologies.

The startup’s progress will ultimately depend on whether its AI-discovered materials can move successfully from computational predictions and laboratory validation into scalable semiconductor applications. But with its latest funding round, the IIT Madras alumni-founded company has secured a strong financial foundation for its next stage of development.
