India’s Private Space Sector Enters a New Era as GalaxEye Founder Suyash Singh Eyes Global Growth and Space-Tech Unicorns

India’s private space industry is entering a new phase of commercialisation, with startups increasingly moving beyond technology demonstrations toward operational satellites, international customers and scalable space-based services. Among the companies at the centre of this transition is Bengaluru-based GalaxEye, whose co-founder and CEO Suyash Singh is positioning the company to compete in the rapidly expanding global Earth-observation market.

Founded in 2021 by a team of engineers from IIT Madras, GalaxEye has developed an Earth-observation approach that combines optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensing. The company says its technology is designed to provide more consistent imagery across weather and lighting conditions, addressing limitations associated with relying on optical or radar imagery alone.

The company reached a major milestone in May 2026 with the launch of Mission Drishti, a 190-kilogram Earth-observation satellite. Business Standard reported that the satellite combines electro-optical and SAR sensors on a single operational platform, enabling imaging capabilities designed for both daytime and nighttime and across challenging weather conditions.

From Demonstration to Commercial Opportunity

For GalaxEye, the significance of Mission Drishti extends beyond the launch itself. The company is attempting to turn proprietary space technology into a commercially scalable data business.

Before the mission, GalaxEye had already completed a series of technology milestones, including a space technology demonstration aboard ISRO’s POEM mission in 2024. It also closed a $10 million Series A round in 2024 and subsequently raised approximately $4.8 million in an extension of that round in March 2026, according to Inc42.

The company has identified several potential applications for its satellite data, including defence, agriculture, disaster management, infrastructure and maritime surveillance. Demand from government and commercial users is expected to be an important component of the company’s path toward recurring revenues.

Building for a Global Market

GalaxEye’s ambitions extend beyond India. The company has described its mission as building Earth-observation capabilities from India for global missions, while its partnership with NewSpace India Limited is intended to help distribute its satellite imagery internationally.

Singh has also highlighted growing international interest in the differentiated datasets that GalaxEye’s technology can generate. The commercial opportunity reflects a wider change in the space industry: satellite companies are increasingly competing not simply on launching spacecraft, but on delivering valuable, frequently updated information to customers.

That shift could prove particularly important for Indian startups. Rather than operating only as suppliers to government programmes, private space companies are increasingly attempting to build globally competitive products around their own intellectual property.

GalaxEye Expands Its Spacecraft Capabilities

The company took another significant step in August 2026 by acquiring Bengaluru-based spacecraft engineering company StarOps. Business Standard reported that the transaction brings satellite platforms, indigenous spacecraft technologies and systems-engineering expertise into GalaxEye. Several StarOps engineers have roots in TeamIndus, one of India’s early private lunar-technology ventures.

The acquisition strengthens GalaxEye’s ability to control more of the satellite-development value chain. For a company seeking to build a larger constellation, in-house engineering capabilities could become increasingly important as it moves from a single demonstration mission toward repeatable satellite production.

Earlier reports indicated that GalaxEye was considering a multi-satellite constellation, with plans aimed at significantly increasing coverage over time.

A New Generation of Indian Space Companies

GalaxEye’s trajectory is unfolding alongside a broader expansion of India’s private space ecosystem. On August 21, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the CEOs and founders of 20 Indian space startups, including GalaxEye, Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, Digantara and others. The discussion focused on expanding the practical applications of space technology and strengthening the sector’s contribution to the wider economy.

The growing ecosystem is creating the conditions for Indian space startups to pursue ambitions traditionally associated with global technology companies: proprietary intellectual property, large-scale infrastructure, international customers and eventually billion-dollar valuations.

For founders such as Singh, the opportunity is therefore not limited to launching satellites. The larger ambition is to establish Indian companies capable of competing in global markets for satellite intelligence, defence technology, climate monitoring and other data-intensive applications.

The Road Ahead

The path to becoming a major space-tech company remains challenging. Satellite manufacturing requires substantial capital, missions involve significant technical risks and commercial Earth-observation businesses must demonstrate that customers will pay consistently for the data they generate.

GalaxEye’s recent acquisition and funding activity suggest that the company is preparing for that next stage. Its reported funding has crossed $26 million, while the company continues to develop its technology and expand its commercial capabilities.

India’s space sector is consequently moving from a model dominated by government-led missions toward a more diversified ecosystem in which private companies can develop technology, launch satellites, sell data internationally and build large commercial enterprises.

If GalaxEye can translate its OptoSAR technology into dependable commercial services and scale its satellite infrastructure, the company could become one of the more closely watched Indian space-tech businesses in the years ahead. More broadly, its journey illustrates the larger transformation underway: India’s private space sector is no longer simply preparing for the future of commercial space it is beginning to build it.
