Hyderabad’s Growing Space-Tech Cluster Drives Call for Dedicated Space City

Hyderabad’s expanding private space-tech ecosystem is pushing for the creation of a dedicated space city, with 14 space technology companies urging the Telangana government to develop specialized infrastructure to support the sector’s next phase of growth.

The proposal emerged during a meeting between Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu and representatives of 14 space-tech companies operating in and around Hyderabad. Companies including Skyroot Aerospace, Dhruva Space, Constelli, Take Me To Space, Cosmoserve Space, Abium Space Tech and Defense, and Sunyark Space were among those represented.

The companies are seeking a dedicated ecosystem that can bring together shared testing facilities, specialized manufacturing infrastructure and other resources required by India’s rapidly developing private space industry.

Industry Seeks Shared Space Infrastructure

The proposal comes as space-tech startups increasingly require access to sophisticated and expensive equipment for environmental qualification, component testing, fabrication, assembly and systems integration.

For early-stage companies, establishing such facilities independently can require significant capital investment. Industry representatives have therefore highlighted the potential value of shared infrastructure that can be accessed by multiple companies.

Cosmoserve Space founder and CEO Chiranjeevi Panidra said the availability of common facilities could address a structural challenge faced by emerging space companies, particularly those that cannot afford to establish expensive testing and manufacturing capabilities on their own.

Telangana already has a framework that allows companies to access fabrication and testing equipment, skilled personnel and underutilized infrastructure available through universities, research institutions and government-backed facilities. The proposed space city could build on this model and bring more of these capabilities together within a dedicated ecosystem.

Hyderabad Builds on Aerospace and Defence Base

Hyderabad already has an established aerospace and defence manufacturing ecosystem, supported by a network of companies, research institutions and suppliers. The city has also seen the emergence of a growing private space-tech cluster.

Telangana’s space-sector policy has highlighted the state’s contribution to India’s space programmes, including a claim that companies in the state supplied around 30% of the components used in India’s Mars Orbiter Mission.

The proposed space city could potentially integrate capabilities covering launch vehicles, satellites, orbital infrastructure and space-debris management under a more coordinated ecosystem.

For Telangana, the initiative fits into its broader ambition of positioning Hyderabad as a major deep-tech and advanced manufacturing hub.

Proposal Still at Consideration Stage

Despite the growing industry interest, the proposed space city has not yet received a confirmed project timeline or detailed implementation plan.

The Telangana government is considering the proposals submitted by the industry, with further decisions expected to depend on factors such as infrastructure requirements, governance, investment and commercial access.

There has also been no disclosed land allocation, investment commitment or formally announced implementing authority for the proposed development.

The next stage would therefore involve translating the industry’s proposal into a detailed development framework, including the location, ownership and governance of shared facilities and the terms under which private companies could access them.

Private Space Industry Looks Beyond Individual Investment

The demand for a dedicated space city reflects a broader shift in India’s space sector following the expansion of private participation.

Companies such as Skyroot Aerospace have demonstrated that Indian startups can develop sophisticated launch technologies, while other firms are working across satellite systems, components, data, orbital infrastructure and related technologies.

Industry advocates argue that shared infrastructure could allow more companies to reduce capital expenditure and concentrate resources on research, engineering and product development.

The proposal also highlights the increasing importance of Hyderabad’s existing aerospace supply chain. With established manufacturing capabilities and a growing pool of technical talent, the city has several of the foundations required to develop a larger private space ecosystem.

If implemented, a dedicated space city could provide a common platform for startups, established companies, research institutions and government-backed organizations to collaborate and scale.

For now, however, the proposal remains under consideration. Its eventual impact will depend on whether the government can translate the industry’s demand for shared infrastructure into a concrete plan backed by land, funding, governance and long-term policy support.
