After spending nearly three decades travelling across the world on foot, British adventurer Karl Bushby has finally returned home to Hull, England. The 57-year-old completed his extraordinary 31,000-mile journey on November 2, 2026, reuniting with his mother, Angela, after 28 years away.
Bushby began his adventure on November 1, 1998, when he left Punta Arenas in southern Chile with approximately $500 and an ambitious plan to walk all the way home. What he initially expected to be a much shorter expedition turned into a remarkable journey spanning four continents and 30 countries.
His journey was far from easy. He crossed jungles, deserts and frozen Arctic landscapes, navigated the challenging Bering Strait and encountered numerous dangerous situations along the way. He also faced a polar bear encounter, attacks, imprisonment and lengthy visa complications, particularly while travelling through Russia.
One of the most remarkable aspects of his expedition was his determination to complete the journey without using transportation to move forward. He even swam across major stretches of water, including the Caspian Sea and the English Channel.
The final homecoming was an emotional moment, with crowds gathering in Hull to welcome him. After receiving a warm reception in the city, Bushby made his way to his mother’s house, where the two finally embraced.
Reflecting on his experience, Bushby highlighted the kindness and generosity of strangers across different countries as one of the biggest lessons from his journey. His incredible adventure is a reminder of human determination, courage and the power of pursuing an ambitious dream.
