From fashion and styling to confidence-building, communication and personal presence, Shalini Rathod, popularly known as Shalini Motivates, is on a mission to help people become more confident in the way they look, speak and carry themselves. Through her relatable content and practical advice, she is encouraging people to overcome everyday insecurities, express themselves better and embrace confidence in their own way. In this candid conversation, she opens up about her journey, the inspiration behind her platform, her understanding of motivation and her larger vision of making confidence an everyday skill.
Q1. Your journey began in fashion and styling. What was the original idea behind Shalini Motivates, and what inspired you to take this journey?
Shalini Rathod: My journey actually began in fashion and styling. But somewhere along the way, I realised something important. You can wear the most expensive outfit, look absolutely stunning, and still feel completely underconfident walking into a room.
That made me look beyond clothes. I started thinking about situations we all encounter in everyday life. What happens when someone asks you an uncomfortable question? How do you introduce yourself to a room full of strangers? How do you handle an awkward social interaction?
Your beautiful outfit cannot answer these questions for you!
That’s what inspired me to create Shalini Motivates. I wanted to talk about the little things related to appearance, communication, body language and etiquette that nobody really teaches us but that make a huge difference in our everyday lives.
I strongly believe that confidence isn’t something you’re simply born with. It’s something you can build with awareness, practice and the right guidance.
Q2. You often share practical lessons through your content. How do you transform your personal experiences and learnings into something your audience can apply in real life?
Shalini Rathod: I think it’s very easy to tell someone, “Be confident, believe in yourself and stay positive.” But what does that person actually do differently the next morning? That’s what interests me.
I always try to make my content practical and relatable. For example, if someone constantly interrupts you during a conversation, instead of simply telling you to be assertive, I’d rather teach you to calmly say, “I’d just like to finish my point.”
Similarly, I might demonstrate how changing your posture or the way you introduce yourself can influence how others perceive you.
I also understand that not every day is going to be perfect. Sometimes, even one small change is enough to make a difference.
I don’t want people to just feel motivated while watching my videos. I want them to take away something meaningful and actually use what they’ve learnt in their daily lives.
Q3. Social media is filled with motivational content today. What do you think makes Shalini Motivates different from other motivational platforms?
Shalini Rathod: I think it’s because I talk about things that happen to almost all of us but are rarely discussed openly.
For instance, when someone makes a slightly insulting comment and you simply smile awkwardly. Then, three hours later, you suddenly think of the perfect reply! We’ve all experienced that, haven’t we?
Or imagine being beautifully dressed for a social gathering but still feeling completely out of place or uncomfortable.
My content focuses on these real-life moments, which can be funny, uncomfortable and sometimes even a little embarrassing.
I bring together fashion and styling, body language, communication and etiquette because I believe confidence is not just about looking good or speaking well. It’s about how comfortably and gracefully you handle yourself in different situations.
I want someone watching my Reel to first say, “Oh my God, that’s me!” and then realise, “Okay, now I know what to do!”
That connection between relatability and practical learning is what I want Shalini Motivates to stand for.
Q4. Was there a defining moment in your life that changed the way you understood confidence and motivation?
Shalini Rathod: Absolutely! I remember my first experience with public speaking. I was so nervous that my Apple Watch actually gave me a high-heart-rate alert. Imagine! I wasn’t running a marathon. I was just standing there, terrified of speaking!
But I stayed, and I spoke.
That experience changed something in me. Until then, I had always thought confident people were those who never felt afraid. But I realised that’s not true at all.
Confidence doesn’t mean the absence of fear. It means being willing to take that step despite feeling nervous.
Courage isn’t about waiting for fear to disappear. Sometimes, you just have to do it scared.
And the more you put yourself in situations that challenge you, the more comfortable you become.
That’s a lesson I carry into my work even today. I never want people to feel that they have to become perfect before they can begin. You learn, you grow and you become better along the way.
Q5. Beyond followers, views and social media engagement, what is your larger vision for Shalini Motivates?
Shalini Rathod: Of course, I love seeing the platform grow. Who doesn’t? But what genuinely makes me happy is imagining someone using something I’ve taught them in their real life.
I think about a woman who finally speaks up in a meeting instead of staying silent. Someone who stops hiding behind oversized clothes because they feel conscious about their body. Or someone who walks into an important social gathering feeling comfortable rather than intimidated.
These may sound like small things, but to the person experiencing them, they can mean everything.
My larger vision is to make confidence, communication and personal presence skills that more people can learn, practise and use in their everyday lives.
At the end of the day, I don’t just want my content to reach more people. I want it to make a real difference to the people it reaches.
