Utah Recycles 15,000 Cubic Yards of Old Concrete for Bangerter Highway Interchanges

The Utah Department of Transportation recently completed a massive on site concrete recycling initiative to support new highway interchanges along the Bangerter Highway corridor. Rather than hauling demolished pavement away as waste, construction crews transformed roughly 15,000 cubic yards of decades old concrete into the foundational base for the new replacement infrastructure.

For roughly five months, heavy machinery broke down sections of the highway that had been in use for thirty years. The demolished chunks were fed into large crushing equipment where an internal magnet extracted steel reinforcing bars for separate metal recycling. The remaining concrete was crushed into small fragments and immediately repurposed as the structural road base beneath the newly constructed interchange surfaces.

Project managers noted that the 15,000 cubic yards of processed material is equivalent to the volume of two Goodyear blimps. By processing the pavement exactly where it was removed, the agency avoided thousands of heavy truck trips that would have otherwise transported waste out of the area and brought new aggregate in. State engineers expect this approach to drastically lower transportation emissions and minimize disruptions in local neighborhoods.

The recycling effort is part of a larger 415 million dollar program to eliminate traditional traffic lights along the busy route. By converting standard intersections into freeway style interchanges at locations like 4700 South, the state aims to improve safety and ease congestion for the 60,000 vehicles traveling the corridor daily. Officials emphasize that most existing road materials are entirely recyclable, proving that the foundation for new infrastructure is often already sitting right beneath the roads being replaced.
