Santiago based agricultural technology company WaterFog has unveiled an autonomous aerial condensation system engineered to deliver freshwater directly to terraced, high altitude vineyards across northern Chile. Founded and led by Chief Executive Officer Mateo Valenzuela, the venture aims to resolve persistent irrigation challenges in the arid foothills of the Andes and the fringes of the Atacama Desert.

The technology utilizes heavy lift drone platforms equipped with specialized atmospheric condensation chambers and lightweight electrostatic mesh. Operating during early morning hours when dense coastal fog banks known as camanchaca roll inland from the Pacific Ocean, the drones harvest moisture directly from the air. By applying small electric charges to the airborne collectors, the units accelerate droplet coalescence, liquefying airborne humidity before it dissipates under midday sun.

High elevation viticulture in Chile faces increasing water scarcity due to diminishing mountain snowpack and prolonged multiyear droughts. Traditional transport methods rely heavily on fossil fuel powered tanker trucks to haul water up steep switchbacks, a process that is costly, carbon heavy, and prone to logistical bottlenecks. WaterFog sidesteps road infrastructure entirely by capturing local atmospheric humidity and depositing desalinated, mineral balanced water directly into localized vineyard drip reservoirs.

Field trials conducted in the Elqui Valley demonstrated that a coordinated fleet of three autonomous drones could collect and supply thousands of liters of clean irrigation water weekly. The system runs on high density lithium sulfur battery packs recharged via ground level solar arrays, ensuring completely zero emission operation.

According to Valenzuela, expanding access to untapped atmospheric water reserves provides winegrowers with long term resilience without draining depleted underground aquifers. Following successful pilot deployments with regional winemakers, WaterFog plans to scale commercial production of its aerial fleets to support specialty fruit orchards and arid agricultural communities across South America.
