In industries where failure is not an option, engineering demands far more than technical expertise. It requires precision, accountability, rigorous quality standards and a deep understanding of how individual components perform as part of a larger system. From nuclear and defence applications to energy and advanced industrial systems, mission-critical engineering plays a vital role in ensuring safety, operational reliability and long-term performance.
MakerStrive is building its capabilities around this very principle, bringing design, engineering simulations, precision manufacturing, testing and final system integration under one roof. By combining multidisciplinary engineering expertise with an end-to-end approach to system development, the company aims to address complex industrial challenges and deliver dependable solutions for sectors where reliability is non-negotiable.
In this interview, MakerStrive shares its approach to mission-critical engineering, the importance of integrated engineering workflows, the complexities of nuclear applications and its vision for strengthening India’s indigenous engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
1. MakerStrive works on engineering systems where “reliability is non-negotiable.” What made you choose mission-critical applications such as nuclear, defence and advanced industrial systems as the core of the business?
MakerStrive’s focus on mission-critical engineering came from a simple observation: in many engineering applications, the cost of failure is not limited to financial loss. It can affect safety, operations, reliability and, in certain sectors, critical national infrastructure.
When we started MakerStrive, we wanted to build engineering capabilities that could address technically demanding problems rather than remain limited to conventional design services. This naturally led us towards sectors such as nuclear, defence, energy and advanced industrial systems, where engineering discipline, traceability and reliability are fundamental requirements.
Our approach is to understand the complete system, rather than focus on an individual component in isolation. Over time, this approach has allowed us to progress from smaller engineering assignments towards developing and executing complete, mission-critical systems.
2. MakerStrive brings design, engineering simulations, manufacturing and final integration under one roof. What challenges in conventional engineering workflows led you to build this end-to-end capability?
In conventional engineering workflows, design, simulation, manufacturing and integration are often handled by different organisations. While this model works for many applications, it can create gaps when a system is technically complex.
We have encountered situations where a design decision had direct implications for manufacturing, or where manufacturing constraints required changes to the original engineering design. Managing these interfaces across multiple organisations can increase development time and fragment accountability.
This led us to build an end-to-end capability at MakerStrive, spanning engineering and simulation through manufacturing, testing and final integration. It allows our engineers to remain involved throughout the product lifecycle, giving us greater control over quality, manufacturability and overall system performance.
For the customer, the objective is simple: to have one engineering partner capable of taking responsibility for the problem from concept through execution.
3. Your nuclear engineering work includes material handling, transfer and processing systems designed for demanding environments. What engineering considerations become especially critical when designing equipment where safety and system integrity cannot be compromised?
In nuclear engineering, the design philosophy must go beyond achieving the required mechanical or functional performance. Reliability, safety, material compatibility, maintainability, inspection and traceability are all integral to the engineering process.
For material handling and transfer systems, we consider factors such as the operating environment, load paths, potential failure modes, radiation-related constraints where applicable, remote operation, contamination control, maintenance access and the consequences of equipment failure.
Material selection, welding procedures, inspection requirements, manufacturing quality and documentation are equally important. Applicable standards and project-specific requirements must be incorporated from the beginning, rather than treated as additions at the end of the design process.
Ultimately, the mindset is different. We design not merely for a system to work, but for it to operate reliably within its defined operating conditions and with the required level of assurance.
4. MakerStrive has developed capabilities across FEA, CFD, robotics, precision manufacturing and specialised equipment. How do these different capabilities come together when solving a complex engineering problem for a client?
We see FEA, CFD, robotics, manufacturing and equipment engineering not as separate capabilities, but as complementary tools for solving an engineering problem.
A complex system may begin with a functional requirement. Our engineers can develop the concept, use simulation to understand structural, thermal or fluid behaviour, optimise the design, prepare manufacturing-ready documentation, manufacture critical components and finally integrate and test the complete system.
This integrated approach also creates a continuous feedback loop. Manufacturing experience can improve the design, simulation can identify potential problems before fabrication, and system integration can reveal opportunities for further improvement.
That is one of the key advantages of bringing multiple engineering disciplines together. Instead of asking, “Which service do we provide?”, we begin by asking, “What is the engineering problem we need to solve?”
5. Starting from engineering projects and now serving sectors including nuclear, defence, energy and advanced industrial systems, what is the next capability or area of engineering that MakerStrive is looking to build?
The next phase for MakerStrive is to strengthen our capabilities in complete system development and advanced manufacturing, with a focus on creating high-value, technically demanding solutions for critical industries.
We are building deeper expertise in areas where engineering, precision manufacturing, automation and system integration come together to deliver complex and reliable systems. Our objective is to develop and manufacture complete solutions from understanding the requirement and establishing the engineering architecture to producing, integrating, testing and delivering the final system.
We believe India has a significant opportunity to build more of these capabilities domestically, particularly across nuclear, defence, space, energy and other advanced industrial sectors.
MakerStrive aims to contribute to this transition by developing indigenous technologies and delivering dependable, mission-critical systems that meet demanding standards of performance, quality and reliability.
As India’s industrial landscape increasingly emphasises advanced manufacturing, technological self-reliance and the development of critical infrastructure, the need for capable engineering partners continues to grow. Addressing these requirements calls for more than expertise in individual engineering disciplines; it demands the ability to connect design, analysis, manufacturing and integration into a cohesive process.
MakerStrive’s approach reflects this shift towards integrated engineering and complete system development. By focusing on technically demanding applications and building capabilities across the engineering lifecycle, the company aims to contribute to the development of reliable, high-performance solutions for India’s critical industries.
For MakerStrive, the long-term vision is clear: to move beyond delivering individual engineering services and build the capability to develop, manufacture and integrate complete systems where precision, accountability and reliability remain at the heart of every solution.
