For Shine Parsana, architecture was never limited to drawings, structures and plans. She was interested in how people experience spaces — and how those experiences could be captured through a camera.
Parsana, an architect by education and an architectural and interior photographer by profession, is the founder of Shinescapes, a photography venture based in Bengaluru. With more than a decade of experience, she has photographed projects across India and worked with award-winning architects, documenting projects ranging from intimate interiors to large-scale developments.
Her portfolio also includes work with Amazon, documenting large fulfillment and sortation centers in India, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Parsana’s work has received international and national recognition. She was a finalist in the architectural photography category at the Surface Design Awards in London and has received a WADE Asia Award for architectural photography in India.
Her transition from architecture to photography began during her university years. Travel played an important role in shaping that journey. Visits to Sri Lanka and Singapore exposed her to different approaches to the built environment, from the tropical vernacular architecture associated with Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa to the modern architecture of Japan.
Those experiences sparked a fascination with photography’s ability to capture more than the physical appearance of a building.
“Her transition into photography was not just a career shift but a way to visually narrate the intricate relationship between architecture and its surroundings,” she says.
With an architectural background, Parsana approaches photography with an understanding of design, proportion, materiality and spatial intent. At the same time, she sees photography as a form of storytelling.
She aims to capture the beauty and function of a space while also conveying its emotional character. Light, context and the way people interact with an environment all become part of the visual narrative.
That combination of architectural training and artistic observation has become central to her approach. Parsana describes herself as intuitive and detail-oriented, placing importance on building strong relationships with clients as well as understanding the environments she photographs.
For her, documenting a project is not simply about producing attractive images. It is about understanding the designer’s intent and translating that intent into photographs that feel authentic to the space.
Travel continues to influence that perspective. Parsana makes a point of visiting global cities and documenting their contemporary architecture whenever she can.
She believes exposure to different cities and cultures broadens her understanding of design. History, culture and geography all influence how spaces are conceived, and experiencing those differences firsthand gives her new references to draw from as a photographer.
The journey, however, has not been without challenges.
Unlike many photographers, Parsana did not come to the profession through formal academic training in photography. Moving from architecture into photography meant developing a new technical skill set while simultaneously establishing a client base.
In an increasingly competitive industry, she has had to continually learn and adapt, keeping pace with new technology, techniques and changing visual trends.
That learning process remains an ongoing part of her career.
Looking ahead, Parsana hopes to expand Shinescapes’ work internationally and collaborate with architects and interior designers around the world. She also wants to use architectural photography to draw greater attention to the role of public spaces in cities.
For Parsana, public spaces are more than physical settings. They can influence how communities interact, connect and develop a shared sense of belonging. Through photography, she hopes to contribute to a broader conversation about their importance in the urban environment.
Her ambitions extend beyond her own practice. As a woman working across architecture and photography, she wants to encourage more women to pursue creative careers, challenge established industry expectations and explore the intersections between different disciplines.
What began with a small camera and a fascination with buildings has evolved into a career centered on observing, understanding and interpreting space.
For Parsana, architecture provides the foundation. Photography provides the language.
