Elon Musk’s Tweet Generated $1 Million in One Day for Zero

A single tweet from Elon Musk delivered a remarkable growth boost to Zero, the popular intermittent-fasting app, generating about $1 million in sales in just one day, according to Zero CEO Mike Maer.

Speaking on the Subversive podcast, Maer recalled the unexpected moment when Musk posted that “the Zero app is quite good.” The endorsement came without any advance coordination with the company, but the impact was immediate.

Sales surged after Musk’s post, demonstrating the enormous distribution power of a recommendation from one of the world’s most influential technology entrepreneurs.

From a Simple Fasting Timer to a Major Health App

Zero started as a remarkably simple product. Kevin Rose initially created the app as a weekend project after learning about intermittent fasting through Maer’s experience.

The earliest version was essentially a one-screen fasting timer. There was no registration and no monetization.

That simplicity became central to Zero’s product philosophy. The company focused on making one action easy: helping users track their fasting periods.

The strategy proved successful. After introducing a subscription model, Zero reached approximately $5 million in annual recurring revenue within six months, Maer said.

However, the simplicity that made Zero easy to use also made it relatively easy for competitors to copy.

The Lesson: A Great Product Isn’t Enough

As more fasting apps entered the market and began replicating Zero’s features, Maer said the company learned an important lesson: building a great product alone does not guarantee continued growth.

Zero had initially benefited from organic word of mouth, app-store visibility and growing interest in intermittent fasting. But as competition increased, distribution and growth strategies became increasingly important.

Maer described this as a humbling experience, admitting that Zero had historically been stronger on product development than on sophisticated growth and monetization tactics.

The rise of artificial intelligence has made the challenge even greater. As software becomes faster and cheaper to build, competitors can reproduce products more easily.

For consumer apps, Maer believes this means distribution is increasingly becoming the bottleneck.

Musk’s Endorsement Showed the Power of Distribution

Musk’s endorsement became perhaps the clearest example of Zero’s exposure to powerful organic distribution.

The company could not have easily planned or purchased the impact of such a recommendation. One post from Musk reached a massive audience and translated almost immediately into customer demand.

For Zero, the episode demonstrated how influential individuals can act as powerful distribution channels.

But Maer also acknowledged that viral moments cannot form the foundation of a sustainable growth strategy.

Zero’s Next Chapter: GLP-1 Medications

The company is now adapting to another major change in the health and weight-loss market: the rapid adoption of GLP-1 medications.

Rather than viewing drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy purely as competition, Zero is looking to expand its role in metabolic health.

The company is developing tools focused on areas such as protein intake, hydration, exercise and muscle preservation, particularly for people using GLP-1 medications.

Maer said the company wants Zero to become a long-term “home” for users, including people who eventually decide to stop taking GLP-1 medications and want to maintain their weight and metabolic health.

An Audience Built Over Eight Years

Zero also has an advantage that new competitors cannot easily replicate: an established brand and a large existing user base.

Maer said Zero has approximately 10 million registered users, giving the company an important owned audience for launching new products and re-engaging people who may have stopped using the app.

That existing relationship could become one of Zero’s most important growth assets as the company expands beyond fasting.

The Bigger Consumer-Tech Lesson

The story of Zero illustrates how the economics of consumer software are changing.

A simple product can still be powerful enough to create a new category. But once competitors can easily copy the product, sustainable advantages increasingly come from brand, trust, distribution, community and existing users.

For Zero, an unexpected tweet from Elon Musk once delivered an extraordinary one-day sales spike.

Now the company faces a different challenge: building a growth engine that does not depend on another viral moment.

The Elon Musk tweet may have generated $1 million in a day. But Zero’s next chapter will depend on whether it can turn that kind of attention into lasting customer relationships and long-term growth.
